Sandblasting Differences

Sandblasters can be used for a variety of applications, including stripping paint from metal, erasing graffiti from a wall and creating texture in glass. A wide variety of sandblasters is available on the market. The type of sandblaster that best suits your needs depends upon the type and size of your project.

Gravity Fed Sandblaster

As the name implies, this type of sandblaster uses gravity to feed grit from the hopper to the spray gun. The feed of the grit is activated by compressed air. As the air flows through the gun, it pulls the grit with it. These units tend to be smaller in size, making them perfect for small jobs and working in tight areas. The hopper needs to be continually refilled, however, making gravity fed sandblasters impractical for bigger projects.

Siphon Sandblaster

This type of sandblaster is similar to the gravity fed machine, but it can handle more grit. It also works with an air compressor, which draws grit through the siphon tube and through the gun. Since the compressor has to draw the grit though the hose to get it through the gun, the compressor must be fairly large. This is an effective set up for a home handyman.

Pressure Blaster

This type of sandblaster is not usually found in home garages, but is often used in commercial applications. Instead of an air compressor, this setup has a pressurized container of grit. It could be compared to a can of hair spray in the sense that when the nozzle is pressed, the hair spray is released. In this case, when the trigger on the gun is pulled, pressurized grit is released.

Blast Cabinets and Rooms

Blast cabinets and blast rooms are enclosed areas for using siphon or pressurized sandblasters. For instance, if you want to remove rust from an exhaust manifold, you can place the manifold in a blast cabinet and run the blaster to clean the manifold. Since cabinets and rooms are closed loop systems, the grit can be recovered and used again, especially with siphon systems.
