How to Make a Finishing Booth

Building your own homemade paint finishing booth will give you a convenient structure for painting large objects that you need to paint evenly. Finishing booths are closed tent-like garages that have filtered air blown in and exhaust fans that remove built up fumes. Building your own booth is a very cost effective alternative to having a vehicle or other large object painted professionally.

Instructions

    1

Build the frame for your finishing booth. Lay two 8-foot long 2-by-4 boards on the ground, parallel to each, 8 feet apart. These will become the top and bottom sides of your wall.

    2

Nail through these top and bottom boards into the ends of five 2-by-4 boards spaced 20 inches apart. Build three more of these wall assemblies exactly the same as the first, one for each wall.

    3

Connect your four walls by screwing or nailing the outermost vertical 2-by-4 boards into a side of a 4-by-4 post. Repeat this step for each corner. Screw or nail from the inside side of each wall's first and last vertical 2-by-4 directly into the 4-by-4 posts.

    4

Cover the erected wood frame with plastic sheeting. Wrap the structure from the bottom up, securing it directly to the 2-by-4 boards using a staple gun. Cut some small cardboard squares (1-by-1 inch) to place over the plastic before stapling to prevent the plastic from ripping away from the staples.

    5

Add another layer of plastic sheeting slightly overlapping the first and secure in place using staples. Cover the top of the structure as well, securing the plastic sheeting to the top plate 2-by-4 boards with some staples.

    6

Cover all seams where the plastic sheeting overlaps itself with strips of tape. Leave one seam free of tape to allow you entry into the booth, this seam can be taped from the inside by the painter.

    7

Mount a fan from the outside of your booth blowing in. Cut a hole in the plastic sheeting and tape the fan in place to the plastic sheeting. Cover the back of the fan with a layer of filter foam sheet to prevent outside dust and dirt from being blown in to your booth.

    8

Mount a second fan against the wall of the plastic sheeting on an opposite wall, blowing air out of the booth. This side does not need a sheet of filter foam, but one could be added to prevent any dust from being blown back in.
