You've replaced your distributor cap and plugs and you need to reroute your spark plug wires around the new configuration and to the new distributor cap. Rerouting the spark plug wires might seem difficult but with the right tools and knowledge you'll have them running smoothly in no time. Here's how to reroute the spark plug wires so your engine has a smooth, clean look again.

Instructions

    1

Label the spark plug wires before you remove them. This will eliminate the guesswork of trying to tell which wire goes to which cylinder.

    2

Get a Chilton's or Clymer manual and check the spark plug diagram. This will help you orient the spark plug wires around the engine in their proper configuration.

    3

Start with the most difficult wire first. For instance, you might try the spark plug wire routed from the farthest cylinder first. Continue with the next farthest routed spark plug wire, then the next farthest, until you have all the wires routed correctly.

    4

Route the wires up and away from any places that may cause friction on the wire. The engine will vibrate and cause wear on the covering of the spark plug wires, which will cause them to short if you do not place them into their proper holders.

    5

Push each ignition wire fully onto the distributor cap. Each wire is spring loaded and makes a double clicking sound when you install it correctly. Listen for this double clicking sound when you push the ignition wire into place on the distributor cap to install it correctly.
