The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a top-selling mid-size SUV. The design of the Grand Cherokee makes it very popular for families and the suburban lifestyle. Replacing the front springs requires removing several parts of the suspension, but the rear springs are more easily serviced. After replacing the springs the Grand Cherokee should provide a smooth ride for years.

Instructions

Replacing the Front Springs on the Jeep Grand Cherokee

    1

Raise the Grand Cherokee, securely support the suspension system, and block the wheels with jack stands.

    2

Disconnect or remove the following: front wheels, front driveshaft (if equipped), the lower suspension arm, stabilizer bar links and track bar, drag link and brackets for the brake hose (tuck the brake hose up out of the way).

    3

Install a spring compressor. Follow the directions on the compressor to guarantee the compressor is installed correctly.

    4

Remove the spring retainers and the coil spring. This is potentially dangerous as the spring carries a great deal of potential energy which must be released in a controlled manner.

    5

Replace the spring and reinstall all removed components.

    6

Torque the bolts to the proper levels of pressure (see details in parts specifications).

    7

Lower the vehicle and check the wheel alignment. The wheels may need to be realigned after replacing the springs.

Replacing the Rear Springs on the Jeep Grand Cherokee

    8

Raise the Grand Cherokee and support the rear axle with a hydraulic jack. Use jack stands on the wheels.

    9

Unbolt the shock absorbers and stabilizer bar links from the axle brackets.

    10

Take the track bar off the frame rail bracket.

    11

Attach a spring compressor to the coil spring and slowly lower the rear axle until the spring detaches. This is a potentially dangerous step and must be done with care. The spring can cause serious injury if it is released in an uncontrolled manner.

    12

Put the new spring into position on the axle pad isolator and raise the axle into position.

    13

Reconnect the stabilizer bar links, shock absorbers and track bar before removing the supports and lowering the Grand Cherokee.

    14

Torque the stabilizer bar links, track bar and shocks to the proper pressure (see individual parts specifications).
