Ford Taurus Bumper Replacement Instructions

The bumper covers at the front and rear ends of the Ford Taurus are both fastened onto the body with multiple fasteners, but there are slight differences in how to disconnect each--especially depending on the year of the car. Many people like to replace the original bumpers with aftermarket or homemade body kits, but they should be replaced if they have been hit and damaged.

Instructions

Front Bumper

    1

Raise the car's front end and support it on jack stands.

    2

Open the hood and disconnect the electrical connectors for the turn signal and side lamps, then remove the headlamp assemblies

    3

Unscrew and remove the radiator air deflector panel and both of the inner fender liners. Disconnect the electrical connectors for the fog lamps if the Taurus is equipped with them.

    4

Remove all the fasteners that connect the bumper cover to the car--the nuts and bolts with a wrench, the screws with a screwdriver and the push pins with pliers. These fasteners can be in the headlight openings and behind the fender liners as well as under the hood.

    5

Lift and slide the bumper forward to remove it from the body; you will likely need a second person's help.

    6

Fit the replacement bumper onto the car and fasten it in place with the nuts, screws and push pins.

    7

Reconnect all the other parts for the car--the fender liners, air deflector panel and headlight housings--using their fasteners and reconnect the electrical connectors. Lower the car off the jack stands.

Rear Bumper

    8

Raise and support the car's rear end with the floor jack and jack stands.

    9

Disconnect the fuel overflow hose from the bumper, which is accessible from the right side wheel well. Open the trunk and pull out the scuff plate and the trim panels on both the left and right sides.

    10

Remove the screws and the nut that connects the bumper cover to the quarter panels and splash shields on both sides of the car. Remove the nuts inside the trunk and the remaining nuts across the car body.

    11

Slide the bumper back with an assistant's help to remove it from the car.

    12

Install the new bumper cover in place on the support structure and connect all the fasteners along the car body, in the trunk and within the quarter panels.

    13

Connect the fuel overflow hose to the bumper cover and the trim panels within the trunk, then lower the car.
