How to Replace the Fan in a Lincoln Navigator

Your Lincoln Navigator has a mechanical or belt-driven engine cooling fan. These steps apply to the 4.2L, 4.6L, 5.4L and 6.8L Lincoln Navigator engines and should take a novice about an hour to complete. You will need a wrench and a special fan removal tool.

Disconnect the negative battery cable on your Lincoln Navigator and isolate it to prevent accidental contact with the battery terminal.

Remove the engine air cleaner outlet tube, then loosen and remove the retaining bolts that connect the fan shroud to the radiator.

Use special fan removal tools "Fan Clutch Holding Tool" (T84T-6312-C) and "Fan Clutch Wrench" (T93T-6312-B) or equivalents to gently remove the fan clutch from the water pump. Note that the large nut on the fan clutch has a left-hand thread, so it must be turned clockwise for removal.

Replace the fan assembly with a new fan. Separate the fan from the clutch assembly, if necessary, by loosening and removing the four retaining bolts, and then reassemble with new parts.

Place the new fan assembly and shroud in place at the same time and thread the fan clutch nut onto the water pump shaft. Tighten it counterclockwise with your special fan clutch holding tool and wrench or equivalents. The proper torque for this nut is 45 foot pounds or 61 Nm.

Tighten the fan shroud retaining bolts and replace the engine air cleaner outlet tube.

Reconnect your engine's negative battery cable.
