Side-view mirrors are a necessary component on your vehicle. Without them, it would be difficult to see other drivers on the road, particularly those in your blind spots. From time to time, a side-view mirror is susceptible to damage. An object may hit it, or you may try to drive into a tight spot, potentially damaging the mirror. The 2002 Kia Optima's side-view mirror is simpler to replace than the mirror in many other vehicles. The entire door panel does not have to come off to access the mirror-mounting bolts.

Instructions

    1

Apply a strip of masking tape over the blade of a putty knife or similar pry tool. This tool is used to pry off the side-mirror panel. The tape prevents scratches. There is also a special tool, called a trim-panel tool, available at many auto part stores.

    2

Roll the window down on the side you are replacing the side mirror on.

    3

Open the hood. Disconnect the negative battery cable with the pliers. The side-view mirror has harnesses attached to it. Disconnecting the negative battery cable ensures your safety.

    4

Insert the putty knife or pry tool into the corner of the side-mirror panel. This is the triangular panel in the front corner of the door panel. Once the panel comes loose, pull it away from the door.

    5

Disconnect the speaker wire from behind, if your Optima has the small door tweeter. Pull the connection apart to unhook it. Set the side-mirror panel to the side.

    6

Push in the locking tab on the side-mirror connection and then pull the connection away. This connection is for your power-mirror switch.

    7

Slide one hand through the open window. Grasp the exterior part of the side-mirror to support it. Remove the three nuts on the inside with a socket wrench. These nuts attach the side-mirror posts to the door. Without supporting the exterior part of the mirror, the mirror may fall down.

    8

Pull the side mirror away from your Optima's door. Insert the replacement side mirror into the mount, lining up the three posts with the holes.

    9

Support the new mirror with one hand; replace and tighten the nuts on the inside with the other hand. Connect the harness for the power-mirror switch, and then reattach the connection to the panel tweeter.

    10

Line up the side-mirror panel in the corner of the door panel. Push it against the panel to snap the clips back in place and secure it.
