How to Replace the Oil Pan Gasket in a Toyota Corolla

The oil pan gasket not only prevents oil from leaking out of the oil pan, but it also keeps the oil clean. If you notice a puddle beneath your Toyota Corolla, it may mean that the oil pan gasket has worn out. If this happens, you should change the gasket as soon as possible to prevent engine problems brought on by lack of adequate lubrication. Most Toyota Corolla cars, including the popular 2004 model, require a gasket sealant instead of a traditional gasket.

Raise the car up with jacks and secure it on a jack stand, and block the rear wheels.

Crawl under the car, and put a waste oil drain pan under the oil pan plug. Remove the plug with a socket wrench and let it drain into the pan.

Disconnect the negative battery cable. If your Toyota Corolla has an air bag, don't proceed for at least 2 minutes.

Remove the engine under cover, the front exhaust pipe and the nuts and bolts that hold the oil pan. Remove the oil pan, and cut off the old sealer.

Clean the sealing surface of the oil pan and the oil pan flange thoroughly with solvent or engine cleaner.

Apply new sealant to the surface of the oil pan and reinstall the oil pan. Work quickly because the sealant will begin to set up within 5 minutes. Put the front exhaust pipe and engine under cover back on, and reconnect the negative battery cable.

Jack up the car enough to remove the jack stand, and carefully lower the car. Fill the oil pan with fresh oil, checking to be sure you have the appropriate amount.
