The struts for the front suspension of your Toyota Tacoma truck are essential to a safe smooth ride. If you are installing one strut, you need to install new struts for both front wheels. There are differences in the installation process depending on whether the truck has two or four-wheel-drive. There can also be variances depending on the exact year of the truck. Talking with your mechanic beforehand is recommended.

Instructions

    1

Guide the strut up into the shock absorber tower in the truck's wheel well with the truck's front end raised and supported on jack stands. Makes sure the mounting studs at the top of the strut go into the holes at the top of the tower.

    2

Thread the strut's upper mounting nuts onto the studs from where they now poke out through the top of the strut tower. You will likely need another person to support the strut from underneath while you do this.

    3

Connect the lower end of the strut to the truck's lower control arm using your wrench on its fastener. Raise a floor jack to support the lower arm if one is not already in place.

    4

Install the upper control arm near the top of the strut tower using its fasteners and your wrench (this is for two-wheel-drive trucks). Connect the upper arm to the ball joint using a new castle nut and insert a cotter pin through the nut and ball stud.

    5

Connect and bolt the brake hose to the bracket near the bottom of the strut using your wrench. This is necessary only if the truck has two-wheel-drive.

    6

Connect the truck's tie-rod end to the steering knuckle if you have a four-wheel-drive truck, using a castle nut and cotter pin on the tie-rod's ball stud. Connect the stabilizer bar to the knuckle using the nuts for the bar links.

    7

Attach the lower engine splash shield with its bolts on a four-wheel-drive truck.

    8

Connect the wheel to the truck and lower it off the jack stands, and then tighten the strut's upper mounting nuts with your wrench.
