The tailgate on a 1998 Chevrolet S-10 with the ZR2 suspension package is supported by two tailgate cables when the gate is open. These cables can wear down with the opening and closing of the tailgate, and if they do, then the tailgate can unexpectedly drop and get damaged in the process. If you notice your tailgate cables starting to fray, you can replace them with just a few tools and a little bit of help from a friend.

Instructions

    1

Open the tailgate with the handle. Have your assistant hold one side of the tailgate up. Hold open the clip on the tailgate side of the tailgate cable and pull the cable off of the tailgate.

    2

Unbolt the other end of the tailgate cable from the bedside using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Discard the old tailgate cable.

    3

Install one of the replacement cables in its place with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Slide the other end of the cable onto the circular catch on the tailgate with your hands.

    4

Repeat steps 1-3 for the tailgate strap on the opposite side. Open and close the tailgate to make sure it still functions correctly.
