Checking your oil on a regular basis keeps your vehicle running smoothly and efficiently. Experts suggest you check the oil every time you purchase fuel for your Honda CR-V. There are some basic similarities in cars when it comes to checking oil, but slight variations in dipstick appearance can throw one off.

Instructions

    1

Park your Honda CR-V on a level surface and wait a few minutes but not too long. You want to avoid waiting too long after the engine is shut off because the oil needs to be warm for accurate readings.

    2

Set the parking brake on your vehicle and make sure the gear is firmly latched in the "Park" position. Pop the hood on your car and locate the orange handled dipstick.

    3

Hook your fingers around the top of the dipstick and gently pull the Honda CR-V dipstick out of its tube. Use a rag or tissue to wipe it clean.

    4

Observe the marks on the dipstick. These mark the safety zone for the safe running of your engine.

    5

Slip the dipstick back into the tube and pull it right out to get a clear reading. Look at the oil level on the dipstick without wiping it off.

    6

Check to make sure you are in the marking range with the dipstick pointing down. If it's over the top, you need to drain some oil out; if it's below the marks, you need to add oil and re-check until the oil level lies within range.
