A drive belt is sometimes called a serpentine belt, winds around various components such as the alternator, water pump, power steering pump or air conditioning compressor. This information refers to the model year range from 1993 - 2001 for the Mercury Villager. Although these cars generally have similar drive belts setups, the manufacturer can change some details, so check specific information for your model year.

Instructions

    1

Locate the lock and adjustment bolt assembly for your belt. On the Mercury Villager, each belt has its own setup. The bolt structures for changing tension on the belt is located near a specific component, like the alternator or the power steering pump.

    2

Look at the way the belt winds around the various pulleys and draw a belt routing diagram for future reference.

    3

Use a wrench to loosen the lock nut for the belt.

    4

Loosen the adjustment bolt to decrease tension on the belt, and slip the belt off of its pulleys.

    5

Reference your belt routing diagram to install the new belt. Make sure the belt is seated correctly on all pulleys and that belt ribs match the grooves on the pulleys.

    6

Move the adjustment bolt to regain tension and tighten the lock nut.
