The Mitsubishi Galant has an anti-lock braking system (ABS) controller that reduces the braking force to any wheel that is rotating significantly more slowly than the others. This helps prevent the brakes from locking in an emergency. If the ABS warning light comes on, you may have a faulty ABS controller, but this does not necessarily make your vehicle unsafe to drive.

Instructions

    1

Determine which ABS controller your Mitsubishi Galant will need. You'll want to be sure the new controller is compatible with your make and model of Galant. ABS was first offered on the Galant in 1990 and the controller is integrated into the hydraulic control unit.

    2

Drain as much brake fluid as possible from the reservoir with a syringe and remove the splash shield from the left front fender area. Detach the coolant reserve tank and coolant reservoir bracket. Disconnect the dust shield under the hydraulic control unit.

    3

Label the brake lines before disconnecting them from the hydraulic control unit with a socket wrench. Plug each line and port as you remove it to minimize leaking. Remove the cover from the relay box so you can disconnect the electrical harness for the hydraulic control unit.

    4

Remove the mounting bolts for the hydraulic control unit brackets with a socket wrench so you can lift the hydraulic control unit down and out of the vehicle.

    5

Install the new hydraulic control unit with ABS controller by reversing the removal procedure. Keep the new unit upright at all times and use a torque wrench to tighten the bracket bolts to 16 foot pounds.

    6

Use the labels you made earlier to correctly connect each brake line. Attach the lines loosely while you check the placement and torque each brake line to 10 foot pounds.

    7

Turning the ignition to ON and ensure the ABS warning light does not come on. Test drive the vehicle and confirm proper ABS operation.
