Ford introduced the Explorer in 1990 as a mid-sized sport utility vehicle. The Explorer's high wheelbase makes steering stability essential. If you bought a 2006 or later model Explorer, you can install a new steering rack and pinion gear with the following procedure.

Instructions

    1

Shift your Explorer to "Neutral" and position it over a hoist. Clamp the steering wheel at a straight ahead position and drain the power steering reservoir with a suction device. Unfasten the oil drip shield.

    2

Unfasten the lower shaft-to-steering gear bolt and toss it. Detach the steering line clamp nut, rotate the clamp and disconnect the steering lines. Pitch the old O-rings.

    3

Disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Discard the cotter pins and tie rod end nuts. Unscrew the nuts and bolts connecting the crossmember and bracket to the steering rack. Slide the assembly from the left side to remove it.

    4

Attach the new gear and reconnect the steering lines using new O-rings. Refill the power steering fluid and reassemble the front end. Check your owners' manual for the proper torque for each connection.

    5

Inspect the steering system for leaking hoses and connections. Release the steering wheel. Check the toe adjustments to make sure your front end is still aligned properly.
