Nothing says frustration like a ding or a dent in your car. Whether new or used, dents on the exterior of your car are not a welcome sight. Fortunately, it is possible to remove them without extensive bodywork that involves repainting the car -- by using tools and techniques that are only appropriate for dents that have not also caused damage to the paint.

While there are a variety of tools on the market, they all accomplish essentially the same thing: they are worked into the space between the body of the car and the dented panel and then manipulated to slowly and gradually remove the dent by pressing the panel back into shape. This article will discuss how to use the tools, though differently angled tools will be required for each dent.

Instructions

    1

Locate an access point to the affected area, and position the tool between the body/frame of the car and the dented panel. For instance, an access point could be found between the door panels or through the headlight or taillight assemby.

    2

Working slowly from the outermost point of the dent, exert upward pressure on the tool to press the dented panel back into place.

    3

As you work, move from the outermost point (furthest from you) to the innermost (closest). Use great care and patience, changing tools as necessary as the angle of the dent requires.

    4

When you have finished, you will have decreased the size of the dent gradually until it is no longer visible. This process typically takes between 30-45 minutes to upwards of an hour or more, depending on the size and complexity of the dent.
