How to Mix Automobile Paint

Painting an automobile is not an easy task, and correctly completing all of the steps that lead to the final finish makes a big difference. These steps include mixing the paint to the correct measurements to ensure a smooth and flawless application to the surface of the vehicle. The wrong mixture can lead to runs, thin or thick areas on the surface or a clogged paint gun.

Place the mixing cup on a flat surface with the measurement readings facing you.

Read the instructions on the paint can to find the reduction ratio. Most automotive paints require a four-to-one ratio while some specialty paints have slightly different requirements. This ratio means you need four parts paint and one part reducer or thinner.

Pour the paint into the measuring cup up to the correct notch or marked line. Measuring cups purchased from an automotive paint store have premeasured notches or marks according to the four-to-one ratio.

Add the reducer/thinner to the paint, which brings the mixture level up to the highest notch or mark in your measurements. The actual complete amount you use is based on how much paint you need, though the ratio stays the same four to one.

Mix the paint and reducer together in the cup using the paint sticks. Mix until the paint mixture looks even in both color and consistency.

Pour the mixture into the cup of the paint gun and attach it to the gun. The mixture is now ready to be sprayed onto a vehicle.
