A dual action sander (also referred to as a D/A or DA sander) is a power sander used mostly in the automotive industry to sand down the finish on a vehicle to prepare it for body work. This is important because a good paint job isn't able to adhere to the finish on your vehicle without sanding down the surface. A dual action sander is a bit tricky to use at first, but once you get the hang of it, sanding becomes faster and easier.

Instructions

    1

Use the paper towels and the automotive cleaner/degreaser to wipe down the area of the car you want to sand. Place the respirator on your face.

    2

Peel back the protective backing on the sandpaper with your hands and stick the sandpaper to the DA sander. Firmly press it in place to ensure all of the mounting surfaces are contacting each other.

    3

Pull the trigger on the DA sander and work the panel of the car from side to side. Make sure you keep the sander moving at all times so you don't sand a low spot into the finish. Occasionally pull the sander away from the paint and wipe it down with the cleaner and degreaser. Make sure the surface is scuffed thoroughly. Then you will know the panel is ready for the next step in the painting process.
