An oil pump is a necessary tool for the survival of the engine. It keeps the engine components in the Honda Prelude lubricated and prevents enging damage. In most cases you don't need to replace an oil pump, but in some cases, such as an engine overhaul, you might want to.

Instructions

Remove the Oil Pump

    1

Drive your vehicle up onto ramps or lifts so you have room to work as you remove the oil pump. You could also use a jack, but make sure you brace the front wheels and set the emergency break firmly into position so the car doesn't roll.

    2

Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the engine oil. Turn the engine so it aligns the timing marks, and set cylinder No. 1 to TDC. The white mark on the crankshaft pulley should align with the pointer on the timing belt cover.

    3

Remove the valve cover and the upper timing adult covers, the power steering pump, alternator belts and the air-conditioning belt if your car has one. Take out the crankshaft pulley in the lower timing belt cover as well as the balancer and timing belts. If you plan to reuse the timing belt, take note of the rotation.

    4

Look for the timing belt and balancer belt tensioners. Remove them and take out the crankshaft position sensor if your vehicle has one. Remove the timing belt drive pulley in the key from the crankshaft.

    5

Insert a suitable tool into the maintenance hole in the front balancer shaft and remove the balancer driven pulley. Use a 6 x 100 mm pulley or bolt to align your timing balancer pulley and mark the bolt or rod at a point 2.9 inches from the end.

    6

Take out the bolt from the maintenance hole on the side of the block. Align the 74 mm mark with the face of the hole. The pin should hold the shaft in place.

    7

Remove the balancer to your case and the dowel pins, throwing out the O-ring. Take out the balancer driven gear attaching bolt, as well as the balancer driven gear.

    8

Pull out the oil pan and oil screen then throw out the screen gasket. Remove the oil pump mounting bolts and the oil pump assembly. Finally, remove the dowel pins from the engine and clean all the surfaces of old gasket material.

Install the New Oil Pump

    9

Install your new oil pump to the engine block and torque the mounting bolts to 108 in-lb. Insert the oil screen and torque those mounting bolts and nuts to 108 in-lb.

    10

Insert the oil pan and the balancer driven pulley to the front balancer belt. Use a suitable tool to hold the balancer shaft in place and torque the attaching bolt to 22 ft-lb. Put the balancer driven gear on your rear balancer shaft and torque that bolt to 18 ft-lb.

    11

Line up the groove on the pulley edge to the pointer on the balancer gear case and install the balance or gear case to the engine with its mounting bolts and nut. Use a 6 x 100 mm bolt to hold the rear balancer shaft in place and then tighten the mounting bolts and the nut to 18 ft-lb.

    12

Observe the alignment of the pointer on the balancer pulley, ensuring that it aligns with the pointer on the oil pump. Install or connect the pulley to the crankshaft and the CKP sensor, tightening the mounting bolts to 108 in-lb. Connect the timing belt tensioners, timing belt, balancer belt, crankshaft pulley and the lower timing belt cover.

    13

Reassemble the drive belts for the alternator, power steering and air conditioning compressor. Adjust the tension on the belt properly and then reassemble the valve cover and the upper timing belt cover.

    14

Add fresh oil into your engine and connect the negative battery cable. Start your engine and check for leaks.
