The Hyundai Santa Fe has an anti-lock braking system (ABS) controller that reduces the braking force to any wheel that is rotating significantly more slowly than the others. This helps prevent the brakes from locking in an emergency. If the ABS warning light comes on, you may have a faulty ABS controller, but this does not necessarily make your vehicle unsafe to drive.

Instructions

    1

Determine which ABS controller your Hyundai Santa Fe will need. You'll want to be sure the new controller is compatible with your make and model of Santa Fe. All versions of the Santa Fe made after 2006 offer ABS as standard equipment. The ABS controller for a Santa Fe is an integrated part of the hydraulic control unit and the two units cannot be separated.

    2

Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Open the double lock on the hydraulic control unit.

    3

Use a socket wrench to unfasten the brake tube nuts. Carefully detach the brake tubes without damaging or deforming them. Plug and cover the ends of the hose to prevent spilling the brake fluid on your vehicle because it can damage the paint.

    4

Remove the three mounting bolts for the hydraulic control unit bracket with a socket wrench so you can detach it from your vehicle. You will also need to use a socket wrench to remove the three bolts that attach the hydraulic control unit to the bracket.

    5

Install the hydraulic control unit with the ABS controller by reversing the installation procedure. Be sure to transport and store the new hydraulic control unit in an upright position with the ports sealed. Use a torque wrench to tighten the mounting bolts to between 13 and 19 foot pounds.
