The fuel injector in a Saturn Ion mixes fuel with air under pressure and rendered carburetors obsolete during the late 1980s. A fuel injector has programmable firmware that allows the same hardware to handle different fuels. The fuel injector consists only of a nozzle and valve; it still requires a pump to deliver fuel into the engine.

Instructions

    1

Determine which fuel injector your Saturn Ion will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size. This model is available with a 2.0L LSJ supercharged, 2.2L l61 and 2.4L LE514 engine.

    2

Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Remove the hoses for the air intake and fuel pressure regulator and detach the fuel send line. Remove the throttle body and bracket for the throttle control cable with a socket wrench.

    3

Unplug the fuel injector electrical connectors and remove the fuel rail with a socket wrench. Release the retaining clip from the fuel injector and pull the fuel injector from the fuel rail. Remove and discard the fuel injector O-rings.

    4

Lubricate the new fuel injector O-ring with clean engine oil and install the new fuel injector into the fuel rail by securing the retaining clip to the fuel injector. Use a torque wrench to tighten the fuel rail bolts and throttle body bracket bolts to 89 inch pounds.

    5

Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure. Start the vehicle and check for fuel leaks.
