The full-size GMC Sierra has six different models each with a variety of styles and powertrains. The Denali model of Sierra offers a luxurious ride. The springs in each model of Sierra are heavy duty parts of the high performance suspension system. The springs should be replaced with genuine GM parts. The following will focus on replacing the springs in the Sierra's 1500 model.

Instructions

Replace the Front Springs

    1

Raise the Sierra with a jack and securely block the wheels with jack stands. The Sierra is a large vehicle and the extended cab models will need additional frame support.

    2

Take off the engine protection shield, frame cross bar, tire and wheel assembly, shock absorber and stabilizer shaft link.

    3

Put tool J23028-15 and retaining hook onto the control arm and tighten the wing nut.

    4

Put tool J23028-01 onto the transmission jack and raise the jack along with the tools to take the pressure off the spring.

    5

Remove the front and rear bolts and take off the lower control arm pivot bolt nuts.

    6

Lower the transmission jack and release the pressure on the spring coils before replacing them with new springs. This step can be potentially dangerous and care has to be taken to release the pressure on the coil to avoid injury.

    7

Replace the removed parts and components. Make certain to tighten the bolts and nuts to the manufacturer's specification.

Replace the Rear Springs

    8

Raise the Sierra and support the wheels with jack stands. The Sierra is a full-size truck and the weight needs to be supported.

    9

Disconnect and remove the rear axle's lower shock absorber nuts and bolts. If the car is equipped with it, remove the Real Time Damping sensor.

    10

Attach a spring compressor before lowering the rear axle slowly to remove the pressure from the spring coils. This is the most dangerous step in the repair. The spring coil holds a great deal of energy which must be released slowly and carefully.

    11

Place the spring and upper and lower insulator onto the Sierra and install the rear spring to the axle.

    12

Jack up the rear axle and tighten down the lower shock absorber nuts to the rear axle to manufacturer's specifications.

    13

Take away the supports from the rear axle and lower the GMC Sierra.
