The lower ball joints in your truck, which are part of the front end, help to control the steering, alignment and contribute to the life of your tires. With a little time, patience and the right tools, you can replace the lower ball joints in your truck, a do-it-yourself repair that can save you time and money, plus extend the life and function of your vehicle.

Instructions

    1

Secure the truck in a set of jack stands, remove the wheel and complete the disassembling of the lower ball joints. This can be done in a couple of hours with a few simple tools.

    2

Purchase the new lower ball joints for your specific make, model and year of your truck at your local auto parts store or dealership. If you are unsure of the ball joints you need, consult with a professional mechanic or auto part store associate.

    3

Inspect the new parts to ensure they are not damaged and that they will fit your make and model of truck. Compare them to the old ball joints to see that they are the same, sans the wear and tear or damaged areas. If there is damage to the new ball joints, exchange them.

    4

Use a drive screw kit to push the ball joint into place. Set the driving cup above the hole and pick out the appropriate receiver cup for the shoulder of the ball joint. Slide the ball joint up into the hole and place the press around it. Slowly turn the crank to create tension on the press. This will push the ball joint into place.

    5

Add grease to the lower ball joint with a grease gun and re-install the front end of your truck. Double check that everything is secure and the wheel is on properly before lowering the truck from the jack stands.
