The Mercury Villager fuel pump is electric so you should check its fuses and relays before looking at the fuel pump itself. If your fuel tank is not empty but your engine is still having trouble getting fuel, you may need to clean or replace your fuel pump The Mercury Villager's variety of styles may determine the replacement fuel pump you choose.

Instructions

    1

Choose a new fuel pump for your Mercury Villager. This will require you to know the make and model, engine size and engine type. Models made from 1993 to 1998 have a 3.0 L VG30E engine and models made after 1998 have a 3.3 L VG33E engine.

    2

Prepare your vehicle for fuel pump servicing. Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Raise the vehicle on a hoist and drain the fuel tank.

    3

Remove the fuel filler protector and tube, and detach the electrical harnesses for the fuel level sender and fuel pump. Disconnect the fuel lines and support the fuel tank. Remove the mounting straps for the fuel tank with a socket wrench and lower the fuel tank.

    4

Unscrew the six bolts on the fuel pump with a socket wrench and lift the fuel pump out of the tank, being sure to tip the fuel pump and fuel level sensor as you do so. Remove the two bolts on the fuel pump level sensor and discard the old gasket. You can now separate the fuel pump from its bracket.

    5

Install the new fuel pump using the items included in the kit, especially the gasket. Use a torque wrench to tighten the fuel pump bolts to between 17 and 23 in. lbs. Tighten the fuel tank strap bolts to between 20 and 26 ft. lbs. with a torque wrench.
