The oil pump lubricates the engine in your Mercury Villager by circulating the oil. The oil pump is usually located in the oil pan, and you can change it yourself with only a few tools if you follow an orderly plan.

Instructions

Remove the Oil Pump

    1

Drive your Mercury Villager onto ramps or lifts. If you use a jack, brace the front wheels and set the emergency brake.

    2

Remove the oil pan at the base of the engine. Install the transverse member. Tighten the bolts to 58 to 65 ft-lb. Install the engine mount through bolts, tightening them to 58 to 65 ft-lb.

    3

Remove the following components in order: the timing belt, the crankshaft sprocket, the inner timing belt guide, the timing belt tensioner nut, the tensioner and spring and the alternator mounting bracket-to-oil pump bolt (push the bracket out of the way).

    4

Remove the three power steering pump bolts. Rotate the pulley to get to the bolts.

    5

Take off the power steering pump bracket bolts and remove the bracket. Move the power steering pump to the side. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector. Remove the oil filter adapter bolts and the oil filter and adapter assembly. Throw out the O-rings.

    6

Remove the two bolts for the oil pump pickup tube and screen assembly. Discard the O-rings. Take off the six oil pump bolts and take the pump assembly out of the engine. Throw out the gasket.

Install the New Oil Pump

    7

Clean all surfaces of contaminants and debris. Use new gaskets and seals when you insert the new pump.

    8

Replace the front crankshaft. Lay the oil pump on a flat surface and hold the pump down. Pry the crankshaft seal from the pump. With a seal driver, drive the new seal into the oil pump. Add engine oil to the inner lip of the new seal.

    9

Install the new oil pump by installing components in the reverse order of how you took them out. Tighten the long bolts to 9 to 12 ft-lb and the shorter ones to 38 to 45 in-lb.

    10

Add the oil pump pickup tube and screen assembly. Tighten the bolts to 12 to 15 ft-lb on 1993 to 1998 3.0L engines and 15 to 20 ft-lb on 1999 to 2000 3.3L engines.

    11

Insert the oil filter adapter. Tighten the adapter bolts to 12 to 15 ft-lb on 1993 to 1998 3.0L engines and 15 to 20 ft-lb on 1999 to 2000 3.3L engines.

    12

Put fresh oil into the engine and start your Mercury Villager. Check for leaks around your working area.
