With a large interior, there is ample cargo space and passenger seating in your 2001 through 2005 Subaru Outback. This allows you to move your family and friends and all of their stuff with ease. To keep your Subaru Outback running smoothly you need to keep up the maintenance on your Outback by replacing the valve cover gasket.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the breather hose attached to the valve cover. Remove the retainer bolts from the rocker cover.

    2

Remove the rocker cover from the cylinder head. Remove the old gasket from the rocker cover. Using automotive engine cleaner and a clean rag, clean the surface of the cylinder head and the rocker cover.

    3

Remove the old valve cover gasket. Place a thin layer of adhesive on the mating surface of the rocker cover to hold the gasket in place during installation. Install a new gasket, and gently press down.

    4

Place the valve cover back into place and tighten the bolts in sequence, starting in the middle and working outward. Reattach the breather hose to the valve cover. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

    5

Add oil to the engine and start the engine. Start the car and allow the engine to run for 10 to 15 minutes idle. This will allow the oil to move to the top of the engine.
