When your Outback is blowing warm air from the air conditioner, recharging the system may fix the problem, especially if all of the components are working properly. Since the Subaru Outback came out in 2000, all models can be safely recharged using R134 refrigerant if it is publicly available in your area. In some places, you will need a license to purchase the refrigerant.

Instructions

    1

Read all directions included in the automotive air conditioner pressure gauge kit and the automotive air conditioner refill kit. Some kits may have special instructions to ensure safe and proper usage. Make sure that you put on safety goggles and gloves before working on the air conditioner.

    2

Inspect all of the air conditioner lines for damage. You can use an automotive leak detector kit from a parts store to help you do this. Replace or repair any damaged parts before you proceed with the recharge. It is a federal offense to knowingly discharge refrigerant into the air. This includes recharging a system that you know leaks.

    3

Locate the Low Pressure Side or LPS port connector. You can find this centered in front of the engine block on most models. It has a yellow cap that may be marked L or LOW. Take this cap off and put it in a safe place. Use a clean towel to wipe the port off. Debris that enters the system may damage it.

    4

Check the pressure in the system using the pressure gauge. If the pressure is in the acceptable range, you should take your Outback to a professional for service before you attempt to recharge the system.

    5

Connect the refrigerant to the LPS quick connect valve. Open the valve to allow the system to pull the refrigerant out of the can. Keep in mind that it can take as long as 10 minutes for the can to fully empty. You may need to add more than one can to fully recharge the system. If this is the case, you should check the pressure often to make sure that it stays below the dangerous level.

    6

Close the valve and unhook the refrigerant from the LPS. Replace the cap on the quick connect port valve.

    7

Keep the air conditioner running for 20 minutes to circulate the refrigerant throughout the entire vehicle.
