The Plymouth Neon has an electric fuel pump so you should ensure that its fuses and relays are working before inspecting it. You may need to clean or replace your fuel pump if your fuel tank is not empty but your engine is still having trouble getting fuel. The Chevy Cobalt's variety of styles and trim levels can affect the replacement fuel pump you choose.

Instructions

    1

Determine which fuel pump your Plymouth Neon will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size and type. A Plymouth Neon can have a 2.0 L 420A or 2.0 L A588 engine.

    2

Prepare your vehicle for fuel pump servicing. Relieve the fuel system pressure and drain the fuel tank. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

    3

Remove the evaporative emissions (EVAP) line from the EVAP canister and then take out the EVAP canister. Disconnect the fuel line from the fuel pump by squeezing the quick connect retainers. Depress the retainer for the electrical connector to the fuel pump and pull off the electrical connector. Remove the fuel hoses from the fuel tank.

    4

Support the fuel tank with a jack and remove the bolts on the fuel tank strap. Release the lock nut on the fuel pump with a ratchet and spanner wrench or tool J39765, depending on the model. Remove the fuel pump and discard the O-ring seal.

    5

Install the new fuel pump using the items included in the kit, especially the O-ring seal and ensure the alignment tab sits in the notch on the fuel tank. Tighten the fuel pump lock nut to 41 ft. lbs. with a torque wrench. Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure.
