How to Replace the PCV Valve in a Mercury Cougar

The positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve controls the amount of pressure that builds up in your engine. If this part gets clogged or breaks on your Mercury Cougar, you'll need to replace the valve in order to prevent your engine from running rough or backfiring. In a few short steps, you can replace the PCV valve on your Mercury Cougar.

Open the hood of your Mercury Cougar and locate the PCV valve. You should have your car idling while you perform this step. You'll find the PCV valve in the back of the engine connected to a small PCV valve hose.

Remove the PCV valve in order to check if it needs replacement. Leave the hose attached temporarily while you check the vacuum and shake the part. Check for vacuum at the bottom of the valve and listen for a rattling sound. If the valve fails both tests, you need to order a new part.

Order the PCV valve for your Mercury Cougar. You can find PCV valves for six-cylinder Cougars manufactured between 1999 and 2002 on Car Stuff.

Place the new PCV valve into the spot of the former valve. Once you push it into the grommet, you can attach the hose to make the Cougar operational again.
