The universal joint, also called the U-joint, is a key component in your Mustang's transmission and driveshaft. If you notice a clunking sound when placing the car in gear, or a shudder while accelerating, the universal joint likely needs to be changed. The main parts of the U-joint are the "spider" within the driveshaft yoke, and the bearings holding it in place. A professional body shop is recommended for changing the universal joint, unless you have some experience doing similar work, or are up for a challenge.

Instructions

    1

Raise the Mustang's rear end on jack stands and block the front wheels. Use chalk or washable paint to place marks on the flanges connecting the driveshaft to the differential and transmission, so you'll know how they need to be aligned.

    2

Disconnect the driveshaft from the differential by removing the bolts with a flare-nut wrench. If this car has a two-piece driveshaft, remove the bolts for the center support bearing. Disconnect the driveshaft from the transmission and then lower the driveshaft.

    3

Remove the snap rings from the sides of the U-joint using a small pair of needle-nose pliers.

    4

Place the driveshaft on the workbench with the joint inside the vise. Place sockets or pieces of pipe within the bearing caps; one must be smaller than the caps' diameter and the other must be larger. Press the joint with the vise to force one cap into the large socket, then switch the sockets' positions and repeat the process for the other cap.

    5

Pack the new bearings with grease. The U-joint's servicing kit will include specific lubrication instructions that you must follow.

    6

Position the spider within the yoke and partially insert the new bearing caps, inserting the ends of the spider within the caps from inside the yoke. Press the caps all the way into position with the vise.

    7

Install the snap rings into the yoke. If you have trouble fitting them, strike the yoke with a hammer to spring the yoke ears so the rings will seat. Install the grease fitting and fill the joint with grease.

    8

Reconnect the driveshaft to the Mustang, using your markings to properly line the shaft with the transmission and differential. If the differential or transmission has been rotated for any reason, put the car in neutral or rotate a wheel to put it back in its original alignment.
