How to Install an Automotive Ammeter

A vehicle's electrical system is indispensable to its functionality, and crucial to the electrical system itself are the gauges and meters that measure amps, volts and other characteristics of electricity. An ammeter measures another quality: the directional flow of the electricity. While once commonplace in cars, they're no longer a standard piece of equipment. However, you can install an after-market ammeter to measure the electrical flow of your vehicle.

Instructions

Open the hood and disconnect the battery for safety.

Connect the positive and negative wires of the ammeter to the positive and negative battery terminals.

Locate the white wires connected to the alternator. Snip the wires with a wire cutter.

Solder the loose white wires to the ammeter circuit.

Run 14-gauge wire from the battery terminal to the dashboard (or wherever you want to mount the ammeter).

Attach the 14-gauge wire to the back terminal of the meter. Tighten with the hex nut and mount the meter in a visible place.
