How to Drop the Oil Pan in a Pontiac Grand Am

The most commonly found Grand Am ranges from model years 1999 through 2005, when the company stopped producing the vehicle. The oil pan on the Grand Am requires replacement if it gets damaged. The 2.2L engine is the most common engine in the Grand Am, but there is also a 2.4L engine.

Jack up the vehicle using a jack and support with jack stands. Always follow the jack manufacturer's instructions on where to properly position the jack and jack stands for safety.

Position an oil drip pan under the oil pan, located under the engine, about in the center of the tires. Use a wrench to unscrew the oil pan plug located at the back of the engine oil pan, which will allow all the oil to drain from the engine oil pan. Replace the oil pan plug.

Remove the engine mount strut bracket, the drive belt and the lower and upper air compressor bolts. These are located right next to the oil pan, and require a wrench to remove them.

Use a wrench to unscrew each of the 15 bolts surrounding the outer edge of the oil pan. To remove them, use a crisscross pattern; remove a bolt from one side of the pan, then from the opposite side. The oil pan will drop off.
