Mercury created its Cougar model in 1967 and the model was in production until 2002 with changes throughout. When you experience an electrical outage such as your stereo not turning on, it's possible the problem is a blown fuse. It's simple to replace a blown fuse in your Mercury Cougar without seeing a mechanic.

Instructions

    1

Switch off your Mercury Cougar before taking out any fuses. Find the fuse box under the steering wheel near the brake pedal.

    2

Pull down the lock release lever to open the fuse box. Review the fuse locations for your model Mercury Cougar to find locate the fuse you suspect, such as the wiper fuse in slot 20.

    3

Use a fuse puller to remove the fuse that is tied to the piece of electrical equipment you're having trouble with. Examine the fuse, making sure it's no longer working. A burnt out wire indicates a blown fuse.

    4

Replace the fuse with one of the same amperage. Review the amperage of each fuse listed on the back of the fuse panel.

    5

Slide the new fuse into the slot and close the fuse box. Verify the electrical issue has been resolved.
