The Dodge Durango was introduced as a mid-size SUV, but has since been upgraded to a full-size SUV. The springs in the Durango's suspension offer heavy duty protection. The Dodge Durango's springs are mounted in an easily accessible configuration. Due to the Durango's size, replacing the Dodge Durango's springs requires extra precaution when blocking the wheels.

Instructions

Replacing Front Springs on the Dodge Durango

    1

Use a floor jack beneath the lower control arm to support the suspension during servicing.

    2

Remove the front wheel, shocks, stabilizer link and lower ball joint.

    3

Take off the coil spring by slowly lowering the floor jack. This is the most dangerous part of the procedure. The coil spring has stored a great deal of energy, so lower the floor jack slowly to relieve the pressure.

    4

Install the new spring, then raise the control arm back into position. It's OK to use a non-factory spring on the Durango; many SUV owners modify the suspension and numerous kits are available.

    5

Install and/or connect the lower ball joint, stabilizer, shocks and front wheel.

    6

Check the Durango to make certain everything on the vehicle has been returned to its original state before lowering and removing the jack stands.

Replacing Rear Springs on the Dodge Durango

    7

Use jacks under the frame rails and under the rear axle to support the Durango. The heavy SUV is potentially dangerous, so use heavy duty jacks and jack stands.

    8

Take off the rear wheels, the shocks, the U-bolts on the axle, bolts on the spring eyes and finally the leaf spring. Be careful when removing the spring and components. The leaf spring can carry potential energy which is released when the spring is taken from the Durango.

    9

Position the new spring properly and align the centering bolt and finger tighten.

    10

Align front and rear spring eyes with their respective brackets, insert the bolts and finger tighten.

    11

Put the spring plates and U-bolts back onto the Durango and finger tighten the bolts.

    12

Install the shocks and wheels back onto the Durango.

    13

Lower the Durango and tighten all the nuts to factory specifications. The nuts need to be tightened when the Durango is on the ground to insure the suspension performs properly and to eliminate early wear on rubber components.
