How to Replace the Heater Hoses in a Dodge Intrepid

Over time, radiator hoses can wear out and become cracked and brittle, which can results in leaks and loss of engine coolant. Fortunately, replacing heater hoses is one job that is easy for even novice mechanics. Here's how to change the heater hoses in a 1993 to 1997 Dodge Intrepid.

Make sure the engine is completely cool and remove the radiator cap. Loosen the drain plug on the underside of the radiator and allow the engine coolant to drain into a clean, resealable container. If you are only replacing the upper hose, it won't be necessarily to remove all of the coolant. When the coolant has drained, replace the drain plug.

Loosen the clamps at each end of the hose that you intend to replace. If the clamps are the spring tension variety, use pliers to squeeze the tabs to loosen the clamp. If the clamp has a screw tension, you will need a screwdriver.

Slide the loosened clamps carefully back and away from the connection, then pull the clamp off of the hose. If the hose sticks, don't use a screwdriver or other sharp tool to pry it loose, because doing so can damage the connectors. Instead, use a razor blade to make a shallow slice on the hose, and then carefully peel it off.

Wipe both mounting connectors with a clean cloth and as you're doing so, inspect the condition of the clamps. If they are worn, now is a perfect time to replace them.

Dip the ends of the replacement hose into clean engine coolant, which will make installation easier. Slide the clamps over the new hose and position the hose over the connectors. Make sure the clamps are at least 1/4 inch past the end of the hose and safely beyond the ridge created by the connector.

Pour the engine coolant back into the radiator unless it's old or contaminated. If you decide it's time to add fresh coolant, use a mixture of half antifreeze and half distilled water.

Turn on the engine and allow it to run long enough to warm up, then check the new hose for leaks.
