How to Replace the PCV Valve in a VW Beetle

To keep the pressure in your engine's different compartments under control, your vehicle utilizes a positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve. Over time, your PCV valve may develop a clog or lose its vacuum. If either of these problems occurs, you need to replace the valve in your Volkswagen Beetle.

Find the PCV valve in your VW Beetle. On the valve cover, you should see the part on the far side with a hose attached to it. Remove this hose in order to examine and make the part replacement.

Twist the PCV valve until you feel it loosen in your hands. Pull it towards you and then prepare to run a few troubleshooting techniques.

Feel for a vacuum on the bottom of the valve. Then listen for a rattling sound when you shake it. If the part fails either test, you'll need to install a new PCV valve on your Beetle.

Take the longer side and guide it into the opening of the PCV valve. Once you have tightened it enough, you can finish the install by fitting the smaller end to the hose.
