The ignition coil is a main part of the distributor ignition system on Dodge Durango SUVs with a 5.9L gasoline engine. This type of system uses the ignition coil to fire the spark plugs. Most do-it-yourself fans can replace the Durango ignition coil, when it becomes necessary.

Instructions

    1

Remove the negative battery cable from the battery. Accidental contact can create a spark, which can start a fire. It can also shock or electrocute you.

    2

Locate the primary wires, or the spark plug wires, and disconnect them from the Dodge Durango ignition coil. You may need to release a lock by pressing on it.

    3

Release the high tension lead. The 5.9L engines have tension on the ignition coil bracket. You need to release the tension before you loosen the bracket.

    4

Use a socket set, small screwdriver or wrench to remove the fasteners that secure the ignition coil. Pull out the old ignition coil and replace it with a universal or a stock replacement ignition coil.

    5

Reverse the steps to reassemble the distributor assembly. Start the Dodge Durange to test that the repair worked.
