The area between the rear seat and the rear glass is known as the rear shelf. This shelf serves no purpose other than improving the look of the interior. There are no wiring harnesses or connections attached to it. The shelf is protected by a back cover, which is technically referred to as the rear parcel shelf by the Altima's factory service manual. The procedure removing it applies to the 1997 Nissan Altima, as well as 1994, 1995 and 1996 models.

Instructions

    1

Turn off the Altima's engine and engage the parking brake lever. Inspect the rear cover to ensure no items are on top of it. If there are items, remove them and set them aside to prepare for removal.

    2

Grab your plastic trim panel remover, or a cloth and a large flathead screwdriver. Sit in the back seat and face the rear cover. Cover the flathead screwdriver's blade with the cloth.

    3

Insert the tip of the plastic trim panel remover underneath either side edge of the back cover. Pull upward gently. You'll feel the section of the cover release from the Altima.

    4

Move around the perimeter of the back cover with the screwdriver or trim panel remover until the back cover is fully unhooked from the car.
