Whether you use your 1999 to 2001 Dodge Caravan for carpooling the kids to and from after school activities, to get your art across town to the gallery, for transporting clients to various locations or just use it for family outings you put a lot of miles on it. If you have driven more than 100,000 miles, it is time to replace the valve cover gasket.

Instructions

    1

Cool your Dodge Caravan's engine by raising the hood and allowing the van to sit idle for several hours. Find the valve cover gasket. Remove spark plug wires, battery terminals and PCV Valves. Using the spark plug tool remove the spark plugs. Using a 9/16 mm wrench remove the bolts and support brackets.

    2

Pull upward on the valve until it releases from it's seal. Remove the old gasket and spark plug well seals. Clean the valve cover with an automotive engine cleaner. Apply new gaskets and spark plug well seals. Place gasket sealer at camshaft cap corners and top edge of the round spark plug seal.

    3

Ensure that the valve cover seat is cleaned on the engine. Place the valve cover on the engine seat. Ensure that it is securely placed. Insert bolts into their proper position and tighten in sequence starting from the center of the valve cover gasket moving to the top of the gasket on to the bottom and then repeat until all nine bolts have been tightened. Avoid tightening bolts too much.

    4

Reconnect the spark plug wires and PCV Valve. Connect battery terminals. Check the oil level and fill if necessary. Start the engine, place the car in neutral and allow the Dodge caravan to run. This will allow you to check for leaks.
