Removing the mounting bolt of the upper strut mount is essential in the replacement of the strut mounts or other components of the suspension system. You need to remove the bolt carefully and inspect the bolt for possible damage before re-installing the bolt at a later time.

Instructions

    1

Locate the upper strut mount bolt. Remove the wheel of your vehicle and locate the strut behind the wheel mounting and against the suspension. The upper strut mounting bolt is located on the top of the strut mount.

    2

Check your vehicle repair manual or use simple trial-and-error to break loose the upper strut mount bolt using the appropriate socket wrench. It is important to break it loose before trying to wrench on it. This will break the layer of rust that has formed around the bolt and allow for easier removal.

    3

Hold the bottom of the strut as you loosen the upper strut mount bolt. This will keep it from falling to the ground when the bolt is removed, if there is excessive corrosion or if the strut is broken.

    4

Use penetrating oil such as WD-40 if the bolt is difficult to break loose or remove completely. There may be excessive amounts of rust surrounding the bolt, threads or area directly around the bolt hole.
