The Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sports coupe that seats four. The first Eclipse came off the assembly line in 1989 and was distributed in the US, Canada and Taiwan. Chrysler sells the Mitsubishi Motors' line of cars. The Eagle Talon and the Plymouth Laser were both Mitsubishi Motors sold under the Chrysler name. The partnership company between Mitsubishi and Chrysler is called Diamond-Star Motors-DSM.

Instructions

    1

Find the oil line to the turbocharger and check for leaks or air in the oil line. A common problem in the Mitsubishi turbo is a leak in the oil line.

    2

Check the exhaust color from the car-white smoke expelled from the tailpipe means there is water or coolant in the cylinder. Blue smoke means there is oil present in the cylinder and the engine block is cracked.

    3

Search under the hood of the Eclipse to see if there is oil on the heat shield around the engine. This will confirm that the smoke from the exhaust is blue and you have a cracked block.

    4

Try to look at the connection between the manifold and the cylinder head. Mechanics often miss a leak in this area. If a mechanic misses this leak, it will become a very expensive repair-it's only a matter of time.

    5

Examine the tailpipe for rust and excessive corrosion. You need to follow the tailpipe under the car until you find the manifold. Check for oil leaks between the manifold and cylinder connection.

    6

Inspect the exhaust ports if the Eclipse is hissing or popping when the engine is running. Burned paint on the exhaust ports means there is excessive heat damage to the spark plugs, ignition cables and the cylinder head of the car.

    7

Use your eyes and hands for the rest of the inspection of the Mitsubishi exhaust system. A visual inspection is enough to detect any other problems.
