Use fiberglass material and fiberglass resin to patch and restore rusted areas in automobile or trailer bodies. Use relative simple techniques to renew strength and restore appearance of rusted out automobile body locations.

Instructions

    1

    Locate and inspect rusted out area. Determine size of rust deterioration by sanding with rotary sander around the perimeter of the hole until no rust is seen.

    Use metal shears to cut away all rusted metal. Leave only clear, non-rusted metal around perimeter of hole.

    Use ball peen hammer to tap and indent one inch of surface around perimeter of hole.

    Cut fiberglass fabric patch the shape of the hole, adding on inch to the diameter.

    Use a brush to apply the fiberglass resin to the fiberglass patch until patch is thoroughly coated.

    Center the fiberglass patch over the hole with edges spread uniformly over the indented perimeter. Allow the resin to harden.

    Mix body filler and harder in sufficient quantity to cover entire patch area and apply to patch once resin is completely hardened.
    Add filler in thin layers until patch surface is even with adjacent car body surface.

    Allow filler to dry over night and sand it smooth using wet or dry sand paper. Wipe it clear of sanding dust using a damp, clean rag.

    Mix a small quantity of body filler with a spoonful of liquid fiberglass resin and coat the surface of the patched area to seal small voids, pinholes or other small voids in the surface.

    Allow it to dry thoroughly and feather the edges using 400-grit wet sand paper. Lightly sand the entire surface smooth.

    Prime the patched area with high quality lacquer. Let it dry and apply a base primer coat of paint.

    Wet sand painted area with 400 grit sand paper.

    13

    Apply 3 coats of paint.

    14

    Buff and polish to remove excess paint.
