The Pontiac Grand Am was originally a popular family sedan, although the latest generations of Grand Am have undergone extensive redesign. The springs in the Pontiac Grand Am are part of a MacPherson strut assembly. Replacing the springs requires the use of an alignment/guiding rod J-34013-27. The Pontiac Grand Am can be serviced by any experienced mechanic.

Instructions

    1

Raise the vehicle if necessary and secure the wheels with jack stands before removing the strut assembly.

    2

Secure the strut assembly in the compressor and match up the compressor mounting holes with the Grand Am's strut.

    3

Compress the spring to half its normal height while taking off the nut from the strut damper shaft. Use the alignment/guiding rod J-34013-27 to guide the damper shaft through the spring cap. Take off the strut assembly components.

    4

Replace the spring and inspect the strut assembly components for wear. Reassemble the strut by first mounting the strut assembly in the compressor using the bottom locking pin.

    5

Tighten the strut mount nut to manufacturer's specifications. The front and rear struts receive different foot pounds of pressure.

    6

Remove the strut assembly from the compressor and reinstall the strut.

    7

Perform a safety check on the Grand Am before taking it out on the road.
