The Honda Prelude has an electric fuel pump so you should ensure that its fuses and relays are working before inspecting the fuel pump. You may need to clean or replace your fuel pump if your fuel tank is not empty but your engine is still having trouble getting fuel. The Chevy Cobalt comes in a variety of styles and trim levels that can affect the replacement fuel pump you choose.

Instructions

    1

Determine which fuel pump your Honda Prelude will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size and type. Models made from 1992 to 1996 have 2.0 L, 2.2 L and 2.3 L engines, and models built after 1996 have a 2.2 L VTEC engine.

    2

Prepare your vehicle for fuel pump servicing. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench and relieve the fuel pressure.

    3

Access the fuel pump by removing the carpet in the trunk and opening the fuel pump maintenance cover in the floor. Disconnect the electrical connection from the fuel pump. Label the fuel lines and disconnect them. Discard the washers. Remove the retaining nuts from the fuel pump with a socket wrench and lift it out of the tank. The fuel pump is at an angle, so removing it may require some manipulation.

    4

Install the new fuel pump using the items included in the kit, especially the washers. Seat the new pump carefully into the fuel tank and use a torque wrench to tighten the retaining bolts on the fuel pump to 48 inch pounds.

    5

Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure.
