The Jeep Grand Cherokee has an anti-lock braking system (ABS) controller that reduces the braking force to any wheel that is rotating significantly more slowly than the others. This prevents the brakes from locking during an emergency stop. You may need to replace the ABS controller if the ABS warning light comes on, although this does not necessarily make your vehicle unsafe to drive.

Instructions

    1

Determine which ABS controller your Jeep Grand Cherokee will need. You'll want to be sure the new controller is compatible with your make and model of Grand Cherokee. All versions of the Grand Cherokee are equipped with ABS.

    2

Turn the ignition to the OFF position. Locate the ABS controller in the engine compartment on the inner front fender panel on the driver's side. Remove the lower finish panel from the instrument panel.

    3

Remove the retaining nuts and bolts from the ABS controller with a socket wrench and release the metal strap that secures the harness connector for the ABS controller to the pin terminals. Tilt the connector upward to disengage it from the pins and slide it out of the retaining tangs. This will allow you to detach the harness connector from the ABS controller.

    4

Remove the ABS controller and bracket assembly from your vehicle. Disconnect the fasteners for the ABS controller with a socket wrench and detach it from its mounting bracket.

    5

Install the new ABS controller be reversing the removal procedure. Use a torque wrench to tighten the fasteners for the ABS controller to between 85 and 125 inch pounds. Torque the retaining nuts and bolts to between 75 and 125 inch pounds.
