The 1996 Chevy Cavalier's back seat is not held in place by screws, bolts or nuts. It's attached by hooks and latching pins. If your Cavalier is missing its back seat, you can install a new one in less than 20 minutes without tools or extensive automotive expertise. Be sure to purchase a replacement seatback and cushion specifically made for a 1996 Cavalier.

Instructions

    1

Park your Cavalier on a flat surface and set the parking brake. Open both rear doors and move the front seats all the way up to increase your working space.

    2

Lift the rear seatback into the rear cabin from the driver's side. Line up the slots on the bottom part of the seatback with the locking pins. Push the seatback towards the passenger side to engage the pins into the slots. Hold the seat with the headrest area angled towards the headliner dome light while you are doing this. Loop the seatbelts onto the side hooks of the seatback.

    3

Check the passenger side back seat pin to see if it has the metal spacer. If it does not, insert the metal spacer into it. The spacer is required to properly mount the seat.

    4

Push the rear seatback against the rear partition. The latches on the back will lock into place. Retrieve the back seat cushion to begin installing it.

    5

Insert the back seat cushion onto the floorboard mount. Inspect the bottom part of the cushion to find the metal latches. On the edge of the floorboard mount, you'll find the hooks that the latches snap into. Push on the latches firmly then push the entire seat cushion down to install it.
