How to Replace a Radiator in a Hyundai Sonata

It's important to keep the radiator on your Hyundai Sonata in good shape, as a damaged radiator can cause overheating and destroy the engine. If you're mechanically inclined, you can save money by replacing the radiator yourself. Although the process is essentially the same for any year or model, here's how to replace the radiator in the popular 2002 Hyundai Sonata.

Disconnect the negative battery cable and make sure the ignition is in the '"Off" or "Lock" position. Unscrew the radiator plug on the bottom of the radiator and let the fluids drain into a resealable container.

Remove any plastic coverings around the radiator. Disconnect the fan's electric connector, then unbolt the fan and remove it.

Use a flat head screwdriver to loosen the hose clamps on the radiator hoses, then unhook the radiator hoses. Inspect the radiator hoses, and if they show signs of wear, it's an ideal time to replace them.

Unhook the transmission lines on the underside of the radiator, and use a wrench to unfasten the fittings. Be careful not to damage the transmission lines. Remove any clips, clamp, screws or brackets holding the radiator in place, and lift the radiator out of the car. Be careful not to damage the radiator fins.

Install the new radiator, and reconnect any clamps, brackets or clips. Reconnect the transmission line very carefully, and reattach the cooling hoses. Reattach the fan shroud and the fan, and the fan's electrical connection.

Replace any plastic covers on the radiator. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Fill the radiator with a mixture of half engine coolant and half distilled water.

Start the engine and let it run for several minutes. Leave the radiator cap off to bleed any air out of the system. Turn the engine off and top off the radiator with the coolant mixture.
