Installing a rear hub on the Ford Explorer means installing the full hub and steering knuckle assembly to the rear suspension. The hub is pressed into the steering knuckle and requires professional help to remove/install it within the knuckle. This installation process remains a complex procedure, especially since the 2002 Explorer employs both brake shoes and calipers on the rear wheels. It can also vary slightly depending on if the Explorer uses two-wheel or four-wheel drive.

Instructions

    1

Insert the hub into the driveaxle with the truck's rear end raised and supported on jack stands, the rear wheel removed and the axle hanging by a strong wire.

    2

Connect the vehicle's lower control arm to the knuckle using its single bolt and your wrench, then connect the knuckle to the upper arm using its ball joint stud. Apply a new castle nut to the stud and tighten it to 66 foot-pounds.

    3

Install the brake shoes on the brake assembly backing plate and secure them with their hold-down springs using needle-nose pliers. Insert the brake shoe adjuster screw in between the shoes at the bottom and connect the upper and lower springs with the pliers.

    4

Connect the parking brake cable to the actuator arm on the brake assembly, then slide the brake disc onto the wheel studs and connect the brake caliper with its connected hose to the disc using its bolts and your wrench.

    5

Connect the wheel using its lug nuts and install the driveaxle/hub nut in the very center of the wheel. Do not tighten any of these nuts yet.

    6

Lower the Explorer off the jack stands. Tighten the lug nuts and hub nut with your lug wrench.
