From 1982 to 1992, Chevy produced the third generations of Camaro, the first with a modified MacPherson strut system and, in the absence of leaf-spring rear suspension, a long torque arm with coil springs. The "new" Camaro offered options previously not available to create a slightly smaller, innovative design. The process to remove and install the intake manifold in an engine overhaul is the same for the 2.8L and 5.0L engines.

Instructions

Remove the Intake Manifold

    1

    Pull the air cleaner and drain the radiator coolant into a sealed container. Disconnect the battery cables from the battery, the radiator hoses and heater hoses from the manifold.

    Continue disconnecting hoses, including the crankcase vent hoses, the carburetor fuel line, the accelerator linkage, the power brake hose, the vacuum hose from the distributor and temperature sending switch wires. Label as necessary.

    Lift off the distributor cap and mark the rotor position in relationship to the engine and distributor body. Remove the distributor and next the brackets for the upper alternator, the air cleaner and the bellcrank when applicable.

    Loosen and remove the manifold-to-head bolts. Pull the manifold and the carburetor as a single assembly. Label all wiring and vacuum hoses and remove them from the manifold.

    Clean the gasket and the sealing surfaces of the heads and the manifold. Install the end seals and the head gaskets. Use a sealing compound around water passages. Make certain that the new gaskets match the old ones exactly.

Install the Intake Manifold

    Set the manifold in place, taking care not to dislocate the end seals. Use a pilot in the distributor opening.

    Follow the tightening sequence to 30 foot pounds for the 5.0L engine. Use 20 to 25 foot pounds for the 2.8L engine.

    Replace the distributor. Set the rotor in its original position as indicated by the marked line. Install the alternator bracket. Adjust the belt tension.

    Use the reverse of the manifold removal procedure to reconnected all the components to the original locations. Fill the cooling system with the proper type and amount of coolant.

    Start the engine. Check the system for any leaks of vacuum or fuel. Adjust the ignition timing as well a the carburetor mixture and idle speed.
