If you own a 1997 Plymouth Neon that has smoke coming from the engine or has oil leaking from under the hood, it is time to replace the valve cover gasket. Your oil light might also be an indication that your car is losing oil and that you have a blown gasket. This maintenance can be performed with a few hours and the appropriate tools and supplies.

Instructions

    1

Ensure that the car engine is cool. Lift the hood and disconnect the battery. Drain the coolant and remove the airbox assembly.

    2

Disconnect the wiring harness and move it out of your way. Remove the wires and the coil pack. Disconnect and remove the ground strap from head. Loosen and then disconnect the EGR valve from the head.

    3

Using the torque wrench, unbolt the intake manifold from the head. Using the spark plug tool, remove the spark plug wires from the head. Disconnect the fuel injection assembly from the fuel line. Remove the alternator belt.

    4

Disconnect and remove the valve cover. Remove the old gasket. Clean the gasket seating area with a clean rag. Make sure that you have removed all remnants that were left from the old gasket. Place the new gasket in, and reverse the steps used to remove the parts initially.

    5

Check the oil level by removing the oil stick, cleaning it with a rag and then replacing it back into place. Remove it once more and you should be able to determine where the oil level is. If it is not at the fill line, add oil to the car and then start the engine allowing the car to run for approximately 10 to 15 minutes. This will allow the oil to move to the head, lubricating the engine.
