How to Replace an ABS Controller in a Chevy Silverado

The anti-lock braking system (ABS) on the Chevy Silverado prevents the brakes from locking during an emergency stop. The ABS controller does this by reducing the braking force to any wheel that is rotating significantly more slowly than the others. The ABS warning light may mean you need to replace the ABS controller. However, a nonfunctioning ABS does not necessarily mean your vehicle is unsafe to drive.

Determine which ABS controller your Chevy Silverado will need. You'll want to be sure the new controller is compatible with your make and model of Silverado. All versions of the Silverado have had ABS since its debut in 1999.

Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Wash all contaminants from around the ABS controller and disconnect the electrical harness connectors from the ABS controller. Label the five brake lines and disconnect them from the brake pressure modulator valve.

Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts that secure the ABS controller mounting bracket to the frame and the bolts that mount the modulator valve to its bracket. Disconnect the connector for the ABS pump motor so you can remove the mounting bolts for the ABS controller. Remove the ABS controller from the modulator valve with a light amount of force and clean their mating surfaces.

Install the new ABS controller onto the modulator valve by reversing the removal procedure and be sure that you use all new bolts. Use a torque wrench to tighten the four ABS controller mounting bolts to 39 inch lbs. in an X pattern. Torque the modulator valve mounting bolts to 80 inch lbs. and the ABS controller bracket bolts to 18 feet lbs.

Install the brake pipes to the modulator valve and torque the brake pipe fittings to 18 feet lbs. Connect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Bleed the brake system.
